Justinians Military Battles Essay Justinian carried on the unending war against the Persians with mixed success. His general Belisarius lost a battle at first in 528, then completely routed the Persians at Daras, near Nisibis (June, 530); but on 19 April, 531, the Romans were defeated near Callinicum on the Euphrates; in September a peace was arranged on fairly equal terms. The emperor then conceived the plan of reconquering Africa and Italy, lost to the empire by the Vandal and Gothic invasions. In 533 a fleet of five hundred ships set sail for Africa under Belisarius. In two battles the Romans annihilated the Vandal kingdom, took the king, Gelimer, prisoner to Constantinople, and re-estabished the authority of Caesar in Africa. In 535 Belisarius sailed for Sicily. The island was conquered at once. After a reverse in Dalmatia that province was also subdued. Belisarius in 536 took Rhegium and Naples, entered Rome in triumph, seized Ravenna, sustained a siege in Rome till 538, when the Goths retired. A second general, Narses, then arrived with reinforcements from Constantinople; Milan and all Liguria were taken in 539, and in 540 all Italy up to the frontier of the Frankish Kingdom was reunited to the empire. In 542 the Goths revolted under their king, Totila; by 553 they were again crushed. Narses became the first Exarch of Italy. Verona and Brixia (Brescia), the last Gothic strongholds, fell in 562. The Roman armies then marched on Spain and conquered its south-eastern provinces (lost again in 623, after Justinians death. ) Meanwhile the Crimean Goths and all the Bosporus, even the Southern Arabs, were forced to acknowledge the rule of Rome. A second war against the Persians (540-45) pushed the Roman frontier beyond Edessa. From 549 to 556 a long in Armenia and Colchis (the Lazic War) again established the empire without a rival on the shores of the Black Sea. So Justinian ruled once more over a colossal world empire, whose extent rivaled that of the great days before Diocletian. Meanwhile the emperor was no less successful at home. In 532 a very dangerous revolt (the Nika revolution), that arose from the factions of the Circus (the Blues and Greens), was put down severely. Bury says that the result of the suppression was an imperial victory which established the form of absolutism by which Byzantine history is generally characterized. (Later Roman Empire, I, 345).

Importance of Mountains in Kerouac's Dharma Bums and Barthelme's The Glass Mountain   Ã‚  Ã‚   Mountains are significant in the writing of Jack Kerouac and Donald Barthelme as symbolic representations of achievement and the isolation of an individual from the masses of the working class in industrialized capitalist American society. The mountains, depicted by Kerouac and Barthelme, rise above the American landscape as majestic entities whose peaks are touched by few enduring and brave souls. The mountains of Kerouac's The Dharma Bums symbolize personal freedom and accomplishment through achieving a connection with nature distant from the constraints of materialism and a polluted industrialized American society. Barthelme's "Glass Mountain," however, envisions a mountain removed from nature as a modern skyscraper office building, an edifice that embodies the degradation of an emerging American society in the 1960s that is in search of "the American Dream" through material or monetary gains. "The Glass Mountain" remarks on the movement of Americans away from nature, religion, and humanity as they look to false golden idols (the golden castle at the top of the mountain) for inspiration to be successful, while Kerouac's The Dharma Bums emphasizes a return to nature and devout religiousness to inspire virtues of charity, kindness, humility, zeal, tranquility, wisdom, and ecstasy (p. 5). The top of the mountain, for both authors, represents a fearful ascent from the masses of the working class huddled in polluted cities in order to achieve a heightened state of knowledge and success, but both explorers fall short of true fulfillment because they are never far removed from human flaws of greed, excess, and materia... ...est of the world from the top is better than actually doing it. The mountains also represent the struggle of the lower classes in American society to achieve wealth for the sake of happiness and fulfillment. What Americans seeking wealth do not realize is that the top is a lonely place, devoid of the longing for material possession that keeps them going in life. The thrill of climbing the mountain, or the corporate ladder, is always more rewarding than looking down from the top to see the ugliness of the city below and regretting that they must return to this ugliness of competition and greed in order to sustain their own pitiful human existence.    Bibliography Barthelme, Donald. Describe the expected pattern of children’s development from 0 – 5 years and include: (1. 1)   Physical development, or   Communication and intellectual development, or   Social, emotional and behavioural development As children’s bodies become more mature they gradually learn to control and use different muscles and make different movements. In doing so, they learn to do more complicated and difficult physical task more skilfully and easily. However this controls may be learnt a different rates by different children so one child may learn to walk at nine months, another at 12 months and another at 18 months. 3 months Learns to support their head 6 months Rolls over 9 months Sitting up without any support 12 months Crawling and walking may start taking few steps 15 months Walking and may start throwing a ball 18 months Running 2 years. Climbing up and down stairs 3 years Catching objects and stars jumping 4 years Riding a tricycle 5 yeas Dancing rhythmically, climbs , skips and hops Newborn babies have little control over their bodies. As they get older, theses reflexes disappear and babies begin to develop voluntary skills. To gain complete control children will need to master two different types of skills 1. Gross motor skills 2. Fine motor skills and hand – eye coordination Physical development also includes sensory development. Children need to learn to control the muscles used for balance and large movements, such as walking, climbing and large movements, such as walking, climbing and throwing and kicking a ball. These are known as gross motor skills. Control of theses muscles develops from the head down to the shoulders and arms, and finally to the legs. At birth babies hardly move at all, but they soon wriggle and move their legs and arms almost nonstop as they gradually start to learn how to control their movements. By the time they are three months old they will have begun to control their neck muscles. They will be able to lift their head and turn it from side to side if lying on their stomachs, and should be able to push up on their arms. By the time they are six months they will be kicking strongly and can usually roll over from their back to front. They will also be able to sit for a reasonably long time if supported by cushions. By the time babies are 12 months not only they can sit without support for a long period, they can also move around quickly by crawling or bottom shuffling. They also begin to become cruise about things around them. They also use furniture to support the get up while they learning to walk. At 15 months they should be walking independently but they may need to use their arms to balance. They should also be able to throw large items for example a ball but may lose their balance. At 18 months their gross motor skills will be quite well developed – they will be able to walk without using their arms to balance and may even run although they will often bump into things as they are not yet skilful enough to avoid them. From this stage develop very quickly. At 2 years they can run, jump, kick a ball and walk up and down stairs with two feet to a step while at 3 years old they are even more skilful and are able to hop and jump, walk on tiptoe, throw a ball overarm. At 4 years they are able to push themselves along a tricycle and also balance and control themselves. Finally at 5 years they become more experts on things they can climb and skip. They will also have good awareness of things around them and will be able to run around without bumping into things also they will able to show good coordination, they will enjoy running around playing chase.
